Yep. You heard that right.
An Atlanta area retailer had an aggressive and ambitious schedule to launch a new store by Friday morning just prior to the busy Labor Day weekend. Failure was not an option. Further, we got the job order just a week before. Could we pull this off?
With our new simplified approach to data center and IT infrastructure implementation, our chief IT engineer, Andrew Ager, simply said "Piece of cake."
Beginning late Monday evening prior to the store launch, Andrew led a record implementation time for a complete data center and IT infrastructure setup for an Atlanta area based retailer. You would have thought he had added two extra solid rocket boosters to the servers! By Wednesday, the store staff was ready to do a dry run. And the Friday Grand Opening? Flawless.
How was this accomplished?
The retailer's main store server was virtualized and installed on our uber-powerful rack servers in our data center. Everyone accesses that main server from wherever they work. The Windows 2008 server is hosted and managed with VMware's ESXi. The local VM's (geek speak for virtual machine) are backed up locally to redundant hard drive storage using the award winning Veeam VM backup management application. Backups are also sent to Rackspace's cloud backup data-stores (you don't have a backup until you have multiple copies in multiple locations). A virtual VPN was configured so that multiple retail store employees can securely access their main server hosted at Cerelogic's data center. So, whether disaster strikes (and we hope it doesn't) or they need to move to a bigger store or open more stores - they are covered.
